Swavesey: Greenwich meridian village.

The Meridian village of Swavesey, 10 miles N.W. of Cambridge, is an active thriving community which just happens to be half way on The Meridian Line as it goes through England. It has an interesting history, having been a mediaeval town; a commercial port based on a navigation drain to the north, down which boats could travel from the River Ouse. This is why the church, manor house and old Market Street are on the extreme northern edge of the present village.

The parish church of St. Andrew, built of warm tinted stone, stands impressively at the end of an avenue of large cedars which host a noisy rookery. Arthur Mee described it as one of the handsomest medieval churches in the county of Cambridgeshire.  The Greenwich Meridian Line passes close by to the north of the church with a marker on the roadside.
