Kew Meridian Pillars

It is not clear how the pillars were used, but the front stone was probably lined up between the two further ones, to mark the Meridian direction. Another pillar can be found to mark the Meridian at the north side of the Old Kew Observatory on the Thames towpath.
At one time trees had grown to the point where the pillars could not be seen from the observatory.  The local Richmond Council, in conjunction with the Royal Parks commission, arranged for a vista between the Observatory and the pillars, to be recreated.  New notices explaining the historic nature of the Observatory have been placed on the Thames riverside, aligned with King George's Meridian.  The marker pillar has places where metal plaques were let into the stone. The plaques are long gone.  Perhaps instructions for the use of the pillar were engraved on the plaques.
